My theory is that the more intensely involved we are with caring for the very old and sick, the less appealing the notion of ever-longer lifespans becomes.
I can practically hear legions of New Old Age readers — hip-deep in elder tasks, in decisions and tussles and exhausting responsibilities — chorusing, “More years of this? Please, no.” A number of older readers have expressed similar sentiments here themselves.
But what if longevity didn’t involve an extended period of managing chronic illnesses and coping with frailty and disability, as so often happens now? What if we were talking about years of health and vigor, decades or even centuries in which we barely felt the impact of age? About not merely (merely!) defeating killers like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s, but achieving near-immortality?
Such visions, and the emerging science that might make them possible, have intrigued Jonathan Weiner, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, for years. In his new book, “Long for This World: The Strange Science of Immortality,” he is our tour guide along the gerontological frontier, and our elucidator, talk show host and resident philosopher, too. He introduces us to memorable characters, escorts us around biology labs and ancient Italian basilicas, lets us peer through microscope at single-cell organisms giving birth.
I found “Long for This World” a model of clarity; even those who decided back in junior high that science wasn’t for us can follow what these molecular biologists are up to and what theorists mean when they explain aging as a product of evolution. An excerpt:
[I]f you’re a body and you’ve got to survive long enough to reproduce and you’ve got limited resources, then you’re going to put those resources into the task of reaching reproductive age, finding a mate and passing on those genes. If you divert too many of your limited resources into building a body that will last into old age, then you may not live long enough to pass on your genes. Bodies that follow that losing strategy will get weeded out by natural selection. In this way, evolution selects for decrepitude.
Can we buck that long history? Mr. Weiner, let me disclose, is my colleague at the Columbia University Journalism School, so I trotted down the hall to ask him a few leading questions — like, what is the current state of this “strange science”?

“There’s ferment as never before,” he replied. “Biologists more and more think we might understand aging” – whose causes, he pointed out, remain hotly debated. Which is why, he added, “If you think they’ll come up with a pill tomorrow to cure aging, dream on.” Mr. Weiner takes the prospect of vastly extended life seriously, though, because we know so much more about how cells and bodies behave than we used to.
Yet it’s hard for any of us, erudite authors included, to quite get our minds around what this might mean. One of the most exuberant scientists he interviewed predicts that when life expectancy reaches multiple centuries, humans may become extraordinarily risk-averse, unwilling to ride in a car or ski because they’ll have too much time ahead, too much to lose.
Maybe people won’t have many children, either. Maybe we won’t need offspring to stoke a sense of immortality when we’re virtually immortal ourselves.
Sometimes the more fascinating question isn’t whether science can accomplish something, even an outlandish-sounding something, but whether it should. Do we want humans to live for centuries? Is that really a happy prospect?
“I’m very conflicted and confused about it,” Mr. Weiner told me. “On the one hand, if you’re curious and enjoy life and you’re healthy, how can you deny the appeal? How can you say, ‘OK, 80 is fine,’ if at 80 you had the health you had at 40?”
And yet, he went on, “You have to think of the health of the next generations, the health of the planet. Human beings already are impoverishing future generations. Wouldn’t this be the ultimate selfishness? What kind of society would we have? What kind of world? You have to consider more than your own love of life.”
To conquer age: Science’s greatest triumph? Or a horrifying scenario? I’m ambivalent myself, and I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

“The forgotten tribe”—what one retailer calls senior citizens underserved by the retail and merchandising industries—is starting to be remembered.
Seeing the desire for fashion along with function doesn’t decrease with age, a number of retail operations have joined the market to sell housewares and home products specifically targeted at senior citizens.
In contrast to medical supply shops and other existing stores for this market, these newer retailers look to present their wares in an inviting environment to serve this burgeoning market.
“They are a forgotten tribe,” said Patrick Conboy, a former J.C. Penney executive who founded Elderluxe in 2005. Grandparents Day 2009: NOT the Hallmark Holiday you May Think it is

To most, this year's Grandparent's Day will likely come and go without a scintilla of thought. Grandparent's Day (September 13th) is always observed on the second Sunday of September and was created in the mid '70's by then-President Jimmy Carter to recognize the eternal influence of our nation's family Elders. Take a pause out of your day and think about how you might "celebrate" this little known event, by paying respect to the patriarch and/or matriarchs of your family. Even a simple dinner where the generations can circle and let Grandma or Grandpa regale you with stories of their past is an immediate benefit in that it will both provide a legacy for your children to carry on as well as appreciate all that your elders have done for you one way or another. Take a drive to nowhere and just let your parents talk, re-discover their values that have provided much in the way your own principles were formed. This will surely delight them. Provide them with some sort of aide de camp, whether to declutter a (and create a safer) home environment, to cook them a meal (or two or three), give a massage, or to tackle a long overdue chore that has been left for nagging.

The aim of this work, on the basis of seniors’ lifestyle and everyday activities, is to create a product solution that facilitates the user’s needs to give more independence and opportunity for mobility and active lifestyles. The project aims to demonstrate a conceptual solution for an attractive means of transport for seniors as an alternative to the walker / scooter in order to better manage today’s needs and requirements. The result is a vision of the future that focuses on the user and their environment.
THE USERS - Seniors with an active life, who are in need of aid or relief for mobility in everyday situations. PROBLEM AREAS - Men tend not to use a walker. Many people have a problem walking longer distances. People using a scooter may not achieve the required level of exercise. Also, it is difficult to get into stores, etc. with the scooter. Many transports have low barrier tolerances. Many tools have an appearance that is not appreciated by the user.
THE ENVIRONMENT - In the city there are problems such as road surfaces and slopes. It is often difficult to get into shops due to space constraints. HOW WILL SENIORS LIVE IN TEN YEARS? - Interpretation repertoires suggest that future seniors will sell the villa to move into the city to live in housing with proximity to culture, consumption and interaction. The image corresponds to my user’s vision for the future.
ICIO increases the user’s independence, and allows for a continued active life. Basic health and quality of life is that the elderly can continue to be physically, mentally and socially active. By keeping seniors active and provide an opportunity to move not only increases the quality of life of seniors, but the cost to society is less if seniors remain active and therefore healthier. Helping maintain the life and activities seniors previously enjoyed also helps to maintain their mental health.

The Ultimate SAFEHOUSE

You remember the safehouse from the silver screen no doubt; it was the ultimate place for the intended to secure one's self from undesired "consequences" plotted by some n'er-do-well.

Well the n'er-do-well has been discovered and it is... ourselves. We tend to get in the way of ourselves and each other with clutter, homes designed for active 30 somethings (probably built in 1930 someting), and poor layout and flow.
The question is how to optimize your environment for a mature adult.
Here are some ideas for you to consider.

Make the house accessible, easily from the outside, in. Don't forget garage entrances and exits. Ingress and egress can be made all the more easy with ramps that accomodate not only slower feet, but wheel and power chairs and walkers and more. Don't forget accessibility in terms of line-of-sight as well. Use curtains and shades with easy or motorized pulls so that you may take a peek outside at visitors without straining yourself or tripping on the way to the window. Make sure doors and interior hall entrances are at least 36-42" wide.
While we're on the subject tripping and falling is certainly a growing concern. Many of us have more than enough furniture. Try down sizing into a few essentials. Take a look at a good lift chair and ottoman (see here). Move the furniture to the perimeters where you can still converse and watch TV but ensure no furniture is penetrating your pathways looking to trip you up on the way to the bathroom or kitchen. Watch out for table clothes too, they snag easily and can cause a fall. Tape down loose rugs or carpets, and ensure no bunching is apparent.
Redo the bathroom. Not only a good investment for re-sell, but might keep you from investing in a new hip! Bath rails (see here), bath seating and other smart safety products will help you remain stable and confident while taking care of important business. Also invest in slip resistant matting for both the bathroom floor as well as the tub or shower. No slips!
Oft-overlooked is LIGHTING. Not quantity but quality, and placement. Full-spectrum lighting is your best best with vivid details made clearer for waning eyesight and foggy glasses. Take a look at this lighting collection for good examples of lighting that's smart and quite handsome to illuminate for reading, dining or working.

Ready for an emergency? Don't forget to amp up your smoke alarm, and if your eyesight is faint, try a strobe lit alarm that uses both sight and sound to wake and alarm you appropriately. Emergency phones with large buttons or 1-touch emergency dialing make sense too. No time to think in the event of a real emergency.
Importantly have first aid in place. You never know when a good first aid center will come in handy right in your own home?!

Hear That? It’s The Sound Of Your New Hearing Aid, The iPhone

Back in 2007, Amy Tenderich wrote about the need for Apple to share its renowned industrial design and user-friendliness with the medical device community. Her plea wasn’t necessarily for Apple to get involved in the field, but rather for it to help device manufacturers innovate and produce devices that people might actually want to use. As it turns out, Apple may be be joining the fray anyway: the iPhone, with its App Store and recently-added support for third party peripherals, may soon become an extremely powerful medical tool.
We’ve still got a ways to go before we start seeing glucose monitors and blood pressure pumps pop up with iPhone support, but some health and disability-related apps are already beginning to emerge. One of the first is a new application called soundAMP (iTunes Link), a hearing aid application that was just released on the App Store, and is available for $9.99.
The application is pretty straightforward: it takes everything that reaches the phone’s microphone, and makes it louder. You can manually adjust just how powerful you’d like the sound amplification to be, and can also choose from several different equalizer settings to specify which frequencies you’d like boosted most. There are also a number of handy features for repeating something if you missed it the first time: a button at the top of the app will replay the last five seconds of everything you’ve heard, and there’s also a button that lets you listen through a 30 second buffer of recent audio.
As far as the microphone goes, you can choose to either use the built-in mic on the handset, or an external mic, like the one that’s built into the standard iPhone headphones. In my testing I found that using the phone’s mic worked better than the headphone mic, largely because you can direct it towards whatever you’d like to listen to.
So how well does it actually work? Truth be told, I’ve had little experience with ‘real’ hearing aids, so I’m not entirely sure how well this stacks up as far as volume and microphone quality go. And frankly, if you’ve got significant and long-term hearing problems, you would be much better off with a device dedicated to the purpose instead of having to carry an iPhone with you at all times. But for more casual use — be it in a lecture hall with a quiet speaker, or a wedding when when you want to make sure you hear every word that’s being spoken — this could definitely prove useful. In my testing all sounds became significantly louder, though never to the point that they were painfully loud. That said, it isn’t perfect — I noticed that ambient noise like fans can become irritating at higher levels, which seems like something the app could filter out.
Finally, even if you’re not hard of hearing, soundAMP is worth checking out. It’s surprisingly fun to give yourself superhuman hearing while you’re just walking down the street.

Low-cost and free site design tools are there for the asking, panelists say
Strategic thinking, negotiating deals and making smart use of a host of free and low-cost online design resources are some of the keys to "Creating outstanding design on a budget," according to the three panelists who presented yesterday during a session with that title at the Internet Retailer Conference and Exhibition`s pre-conference workshop for small retailers in Boston.

Halley Silver, e-commerce director of King Arthur Flour, shared more than half a dozen web sites offering free or nearly free web sites tools that have helped the baking company design an effective e-commerce site using only a very small internal staff. "We do everything in-house with no design budget," Silver told attendees.

Helping Silver achieve that are sites including Colorschemedesigner.com, where users can build color schemes for a site around a selected primary color. The Firefox web developer toolbar, another free tool, allows web developers and designers to visualize how their site looks on different screen sizes.

Silver uses a $10 monthly subscription from a site called Chartbeat that provides free analytics in real time, avoiding what she says can be a lag time of several hours in analyzing customer activity on the site using the free Google Analytics tool. King Arthur also looks to a site called Bittbox for free art, applications and other design elements.

Silver also says King Arthur.com recently has used a free application from a site called IE6update.com to serve up to site visors using Internet Explorer 6--two generations behind the current IE8--the message that they should update their browsers to view the page.

"10% to 12% of our visitors come in on IE6, but our developer spends about 75% of his time trying to make the site look right for IE6," she said.

Patrick Conboy, president of ElderLuxe.com, told attendees that sticking within the budget for site design meant being realistic about expenses upfront. "Don`t underestimate at the beginning, because you may experience real overages later," he said.

Conboy said that to build his site while keeping costs down, he`s used a variety of no-cost approaches such as making use of consumer research available to friends or family with access to it through a university affiliation; and checking out the industry-leading retail sites, summarizing what`s appealing in each and using the top five qualities on that list as a basis for a brief to vendors hired to design or develop the site.

Two other techniques that don`t cost anything also helped Conboy build out ElderLuxe. Networking produced an introduction to Kensium, the search engine optimization firm he still uses, during a conversation at his son`s baseball game; while bartering 500 square feet of his warehouse space to a start-up photography studio has given him a source of quality product and lifestyle photos for the web site. find out more snap36.com

He also uses photography from manufacturers whenever possible.

Conboy said he`s found success with vendors by giving them as much lead time to complete a project for the site as possible, noting that "with my `cheap` mandate, we may not be anybody`s priority."

Chris Pawloski, art director of web design and development firm Solid Cactus, offered a web designer`s perspective. "Great design is invisible, he said. "It`s only when it`s done poorly that it`s noticeable." Pawloski also reminded attendees that an e-commerce site`s design goal should be to facilitate interaction rather than "decorating" the site, and that the sum of a customer`s experience would represent the brand in the consumer`s mind. "Your brand is not your logo," he said.

Place fabric softener sheets in dresser drawers and your clothes will Smell freshly washed for weeks to come. You can also do this with towels AND linen.
Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least 3 Hours prior to burning.
To clean artificial flowers, pour some salt into a paper bag and add the flowers. Shake vigorously as the salt will absorb all the dust and dirt

With a handy slide-out cartridge design it eliminates the pain of turning child-proof caps.
The device is a capsule with pills that you load into the holder. The holder then dispenses the pills with an easy turn of the wrist. The designer, Steven Grech, intends for the device to be able to help doctors understand if their patients condition is due to the fact that the medicine is working, not working, or simply not being taken. The device records when medication is taken, and shows the user the correct intervals programmed by the pharmacist. If not activated at the correct time, the device sends an alert to the users phone via text, or “SMS.” Once in the grip of the user, it opens easily by turning round, revealing the opening corresponding with the time of day. This way of opening is helpful to the elderly, as it eliminates hard-to-open caps. Each day's replacement tube is labeled clearly with text and with Braille numbering.

Construction: Each part aside from the technical package is injection molded using abs. Its light and rigid properties would be a well-suited material to allow the product to be light while maintaining enough strength for durability. via Gizmodo

The Journal of Aging and Physical Activity has just published a report by Koichi Kaneda, Daisuke Sato, Hitoshi Wakabayashi, Atsuko Hanai, Takeo Nomura "A Comparison of the Effects of Different Water Exercise Programs on Balance Ability in Elderly People" which determines that deep water running is better for balance. Twice a week for 12 weeks, 15 older adults at an average age of 60.7 years participated in a class that included 30 minutes of deep-water running. Another group of 15 enjoyed typical water exercise during that time. Those who engaged in deep-water running experienced a significant decrease in postural sway distance and tandem-walking time. The traditional water exercise group significantly decreased postural sway area. Both groups decreased simple reaction times. The authors concluded that a “water exercise program including deep-water running is much better than normal water exercise for improving dynamic balance ability in the elderly.”

New Findings Regarding Restless Legs Syndrome

For the 12 million Americans suffering from the curious phenomenon known as Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) there is lots of hope, but also cause for concern, thanks to a recent study that found a disturbing association between RLS and heart disease, putting it into the category of health problems that you shouldn't "just live with." Fortunately, there are natural ways to target RLS. I spoke with sleep expert Ralph Downey III, PhD, chief of sleep medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, California, to learn about the new developments relating to RLS.
RLS AND HEART DISEASE
Besides the array of "annoying" symptoms of RLS, research increasingly indicates that RLS-related problems can be quite severe. The results of a recent Harvard Medical School study were reported in the January 1, 2008, issue of Neurology, and showed that people with RLS were more than twice as likely to have coronary artery disease (disease of the arteries of the heart) or cardiovascular disease (diseases of the heart and blood vessels, including those in the brain) as the general population. One possible reason is that hundreds of periodic leg movements per night result in simultaneous jumps in blood pressure and heart rate. Over time, this may be responsible for the higher likelihood of heart attacks and strokes -- and the more severe the symptoms, the higher the risk.
WHAT TO DO ABOUT RLS
In Dr. Downey's opinion, RLS has been a notoriously under-diagnosed disease. Some people may be slow to consult their health care providers, fearing their symptoms would not be taken seriously. He says that even now physicians (and the public at large) still have much to learn about RLS. However, Dr. Downey emphasizes that treatment should be limited to people who meet specified diagnostic criteria, and says patients with mild symptoms often can control them with natural treatments and lifestyle change. Treatment strategies include...
Natural solutions -- mild cases of RLS often respond well to natural strategies such as regular exercise and the avoidance of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco. Some people find it helpful to massage their legs or use a heating pad or ice pack at bedtime, while others distract themselves from their discomfort by reading or listening to music. Do all you can to promote high-quality sleep, including keeping regular hours, following a bedtime routine, taking warm baths -- whatever works best for you.
Discuss with your doctor all medications you take on a regular basis. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), or certain tricyclic antidepressants such as imipramine (Tofranil) may worsen the problem. Other drugs including certain antinausea drugs, some cold and allergy medications, and some antipsychotic and antiseizure drugs can similarly aggravate symptoms. Talk with your doctor before stopping or switching drugs and ask about alternative medications if the drugs are indeed exacerbating your RLS symptoms.
Have your iron levels tested. Since RLS has been associated with low iron levels, your health care provider may prescribe an iron supplement or make dietary recommendations to help correct low levels.
Possible drug treatments include dopaminergic drugs such as levodopa (largely used to treat Parkinson's disease)... opiates (narcotic painkillers) such as oxycodone... benzodiazepines (tranquilizers) such as clonazepam... and anticonvulsant agents such as carbamazepine and gabapentin. Dr. Downey cautions that these drugs all have potentially serious side effects, and "physicians must be certain that the treatment given meets the degree of symptoms and impairment the patient experiences."

I can't help thinking intently about the upcoming Father's Day. I've just put the final touches on our gift collection as it will be presented in growing fashion over the preceding few weeks. In addition, my own father rests quite uncomfortably in his hospital room almost 1200 miles away in Texas as I write this. Probably the toughest Father's Day yet for this son, knowing my Dad'sbattle with an ailing heart and pulmonary system is keeping him from the pursuits he enjoys most...dating, traveling, gambling, listening to music, dancing. In general having a ball of a time.
I spend 3-5 days per week in Texas traveling to and from like a commuting consultant, fighting airport security and rental car counter idiocies. No matter, it's tough enough splitting time between my father and my family, so I try to make the best of it. And this Father's Day, it elevates a sentiment that I wrestle with writing about constantly. Sure, it's hard to find a gift that he'll really appreciate in his weakend state, but the act of "doing" for him is quite surely a gift that's difficult to outdo. And that's the crux of it, why as a population don't we do more for those at this stage in life. The magazines, papers, advertisements and retail in general are full of "early life" infant and children's products and ideas for making life the start of a tremendous ride. What about the ride near the end of life? My father's emotional sense of relief when given an electric self-elevating toilet seat is no less enjoyable to witness as that of a newborn playing with a mobile above his crib. It's these little things and moments we give and share with our elders that are richly rewarding and oft-missed. Think about how to enhance and indulge the aging elder with some "finer things in life" that might not seem so clever and engaging to you, the middle-aged and younger.

Find ways to "play" with your loved one. A deck of cards has been so gratifying for my father...choosing to play Blackjack with all who come in. This activity is both mentally stimulating and physically helpful.
A radio tuned into a favorite station- my Dad loves the Big Bands-- will have an otherwise immobile patient tapping their feet.
Treats, a slice of pizza or a chocolate drop, can do wonders for someone with battered tastebuds from bland institutional foods.
Find conveniences that help with an individuals ability to control what they can control. Bath and toilet lifts, electric toothbrushes, an in-call massage... all help satisfy some level of independence.

The Parent Trap: Boomers Help Mom and Dad Avoid a Home’s Potential Pitfalls

Baby Boomers may dream of owning a second home as they head into their retirement years. But instead of caring for a vacation house, adult children often find themselves helping an aging mom and dad avoid the safety pitfalls of the family home.

There’s no doubt where seniors want to be as they age. The majority of seniors polled in recent industry surveys – typically 90 percent – say they want to stay at home. But in a 2007 AARP independent living study, two-thirds of Boomer women surveyed said they are concerned about their parents’ ability to live independently as they get older, with 43 percent being very concerned and 26 percent somewhat concerned.1

It’s a legitimate fear. “Many seniors and their families don’t think about the fact that homes must adapt to the changing needs of seniors as they age until an accident
happens.”
“There are many potential pitfalls that we’ve seen during the home safety reviews that our company conducts before starting service in a client’s home. Our reviews cover 50 different items throughout a home including the entrance, living areas, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and stairways. Important safety areas to highlight in a senior’s home run the gamut from accessibility to lighting to trip and fall hazards. A lack of attention to those details can jeopardize an older adult’s ability to remain at home.”
Many home safety improvements are simple and inexpensive, experts say. Convincing seniors, on the other hand, is another story. Danise Levine, assistant director of the IDEA Center at the SUNY (State University of New York) Buffalo School of Architecture, said that denial often comes into play with seniors.

“We see a lot of seniors who don’t want to admit they’re getting older so they don’t want to make changes in their homes,” Levine said. “Secondly, consumer education is an issue. If older adults do need help they often don’t know where to go or how much things cost.”

Those issues can result in seniors’ adapting behavior to their environment, creating a potentially dangerous situation, said Levine, whose IDEA Center is dedicated to improving the design of environments and products by making them more usable. “If a senior has problems getting off the toilet, he could develop a several-step process of using a window sill, shower curtain and towel bar to get up.” However, a window sill and towel bar will eventually pull away and break, and a shower curtain will tear under the strain, creating the potential for an accident.

Unfortunately, many home makeover changes are responsive rather than proactive, noted Peter Bell, president of the National Aging in Place Council, a Washington-based advocacy group dedicated to helping seniors remain at home. “Too often changes aren’t made until someone has had a stroke or other type of condition that begins to impair their mobility,” Bell said. “It’s a shame, too, because that’s a difficult time to be making a renovation.”

Bell said that it’s important for a senior-care professional to conduct a home review to identify various safety pitfalls from poor lighting to the need for adaptive devices in a home. (The attached checklist includes various potential hazards to look for in a home.) While many fixes are simple and inexpensive, others might involve a remodeling project to help a senior remain at home.

Making Mother's Day a True Day to Share

Mother's Day, just ahead of us, brings with it a flood of emotions for me personally. Over 12 years ago, the dearest woman in my life passed from this planet into the next stage and, with that, left a young man lonely, somewhat sad and reflective for all she had done for me and others surrounding her. Now as I prepare to celebrate this great holiday with my wife, my greatest love and mother of our four brilliantly wonderful children it causes me to think and ask a simple question; "How best do we honor Mom?"
The obvious is the "greeting card-breakfast-in-bed-just-take-it-easy-today" approach. Tried and true, Mom will certainly grace us with a smile, and a nod of approval (until she finds the sink an apocryphal mess tomorrow). But I am inspired to believe that there's something more to give. We are a legion of heirs that have enjoyed the singular love only a Mom can give. Our mom, our mom's mother, our great-grandmothers and so on. So why limit this to a single act for the day; aren't there ways to transcend the generations and honor those before us, honor other mothers that surround us? To honor Moms we may or may not even know intimately? How do we represent and mirror that universally appreciated love, in a way that even our children can recognize and, hopefully, replicate, reciprocate and re-generate as they age. Would not that be a terrific objective as we celebrate this special day? Some ideas I've pondered include:

Ensure that Grandma, your Aunt, your sister... other Mothers in the family come together for a special celebration once a year. Make it a point to bring out old photos and share tales of your family-- for your family's benefit.
Creat random acts of Mother's Day Kindness. Peak into a local hospital or nursing facility and visit with Moms who may be forgotten this day. Ask them to share "their story" with you. You will create a miracle.
Pick up the phone, take a drive...seek out someone you love for a quick "thank you" for helping make the world a better place.
Reconnect two "old friends". Think about someone you know, a friend or relative who is a Mom. Who haven't they been in touch with for awhile? Just create a surprise conference call with the help of your local phone company. What a surprisingly simple, yet impactful gift.

Think about your ideas. You can make a difference this Mother's Day.

A local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just gotten married -- for the fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband's occupation.
'He's a funeral director,' she answered 'Interesting,' the newsman thought.
He then asked her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living. She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she'd first married a banker when she was in her early 20's, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40's, later on a preacher when in her 60's, and now in her 80's, a funeral director.
The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers. She smiled and explained, 'I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go!

Walking the Walk lowers Blood Pressure

A few short walks lower blood pressure Prehypertension is an elevated blood pressure level that typically progresses to hypertension or high blood pressure, which can increase a person's risk for heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, stroke and blindness. Prehypertension is treated only with diet and exercise.
To find out more about the type of exercise, 21 men and women who were prehypertensive walked on a treadmill continuously for 40 minutes. On another day, they accumulated an equal amount of total time by walking 4 times for 10 minutes over a period of 3.5 hours.
Both accumulated and continuous physical activity decreased participants' blood pressure by the same amount. On average, systolic blood pressure dropped 5.4 to 5.6 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure dropped 3.2 mm Hg. Systolic blood pressure lowered for 11 hours after the shorter walking intervals and for 7 hours after continuous walking. Diastolic blood pressure lowered for 10 hours after accumulated walking and for 7 hours after continuous walking.
"We had no idea the short bouts would be better," commented co-author Janet P. Wallace, PhD. "Most studies found in the literature report the long, continuous session as more effective for many variables.
"The biggest problem for most people is they don't have the time. You might think, 'I don't have the time to go to the gym or work out for 40 minutes, but I might have the time to do 10 minutes here, 10 minutes here and another 10 minutes here.' A Little Exercise...Goes a LONG Way.

Small amounts of exercise lower blood pressure and weight. The current recommendation for adults is to accumulate 30 minutes of moderately strenuous exercise on at least 5 days of the week . ( http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/physical/recommendations/older_adults.htm A team of researchers in Ireland wanted to investigate if health status was changed by exercising at a lower level. Their concern was that many people may not achieve the recommended volume.
A group of 106 healthy but sedentary women and men between the ages of 40 and 60 participated in an unsupervised home walking program for 12 weeks. They were randomly assigned to 30 minutes of brisk walking on 5 days of the week (N = 44) or on 3 days of the week (N = 42). Twenty people served as the control group. The walkers were asked to walk for at least 10 minutes at a time and wore pedometers to monitor their steps.
After 12 weeks, both the 3-day and 5-day groups had a significant drop in systolic blood pressure and waist and hip circumference measurements, and an increase in functional capacity. The 5-day group also experienced a decrease in diastolic blood pressure. There were no changes in any of the measures among the non-walkers.
The authors concluded that the study "provides evidence of benefit from exercising at a level below that currently recommended in healthy sedentary adults." They called for further studies on the potential health benefits from low levels of exercise.

According to Pathway’s website, the organization offers its residents “a sense of community and a whole new way of living life to the fullest.” Building that sense of community can pose a challenge, however. “Older adults have a need to be with others, but not always in a traditional setting,” observes Rita Lopienski, Pathway’s regional director of community life. Individuals with physical, visual or speech impairments, for example, may find such situations threatening. Pathway’s answer to this challenge is to offer residents nonthreatening opportunities to socialize through drumming and vibration circles. Lopienski, a registered music therapist, leads groups of residents in playing drums, singing bowls, gongs, cymbals, bells and chimes, focusing on rhythm and vibrations as tools to enhance well-being and community. “Drumming and vibration instruments are unique methods to achieve [wellness], as they include nonverbal communication, focus, fun, exercise and creative expression,” says Lopienski. Individuals who typically avoid traditional programming have joined these groups, she adds, while the outside community, other older-adult communities, and residents’ grandchildren sometimes participate. One activity held earlier this year, the Quest for the Best challenge, marks the Center’s first multidimensional wellness program featuring mental challenges, physical endeavors and social opportunities. The goals for this fun program included, among others, encouraging people who usually don’t take part in center programs to have a positive wellness experience, and providing opportunities for intergenerational interaction. Older adults and nursing students from East Tennessee State University (also located in Johnson City) worked in teams at the event to solve three challenges and receive navigational clues to complete the one-mile course. The World Health Organization, that's WHO! According to the WHO "population ageing and urbanization are two global trends that together comprise major forces shaping the 21st century. At the same time as cities are growing, theirshare of residents aged 60 years and more is increasing. Older people are a resource for their families, communities and economies
in supportive and enabling living environments. WHO regards active ageing as a lifelong
process shaped by several factors that, alone and acting together, favour health,
participation and security in older adult life. Informed by WHO’s approach to active
ageing, the purpose of (their guide to Age Friendly Cities) is to engage cities to become more age-friendlyso as to tap the potential that older people represent for humanity.

For example, according to WHO's study, an age-friendly city has sufficient public benches that are well-situated, well-maintained and safe. Other key features of an age-friendly city include: well-maintained and well-lit sidewalks; public buildings that are fully accessible to people with disabilities; city bus drivers who wait until older people are seated before starting off and priority seating on buses; enough reserved parking spots for people with disabilities; housing integrated in the community that accommodates changing needs and abilities as people grow older; friendly, personalized service and information instead of automated answering services; easy-to-read written information in plain language; public and commercial services and stores in neighborhoods close to where people live, rather than concentrated outside the city; and a civic culture that respects and includes older persons. With all the news about sex and older adults, this is hardly a surprise, but the results reach much further into broader reasons why more senior adults suffer from sleep disorders as they age. The article "Grandparents, Older Adults Encouraged To Seek Help For A Sleep Disorder;

While older adults need about seven to eight hours of sleep each night, many often get less sleep, which may make them more susceptible to health problems. "As we get older, our sleep is more easily disturbed," says James P. Krainson, MD, of the South Florida Sleep Diagnostic Center in Miami and a spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). "Underlying health issues are often the cause of these disturbances. Arthritis and pain can cause frequent awakenings and interfere with falling asleep.

my father, let's call him jack, since his name is jack, sends notes often via e-mail. many deal with areas of aging, whether they be humour or informational. recently jack sent a "top fifteen list" of the benefits of being mature. here they are:

Kidnappers are not very interested in you.
In a hostage situation you are likely to be released first
No one expects you to run--anywhere.
People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.
There is nothing left to learn the hard way.
Things you buy now won't wear out.
You can eat dinner at 4 pm.
